Patrick's Poem

This poem is the sequel to the poem which I wrote when the Reverend
Rona Young was first inducted as Minister on a five year
terminable tenure on 25 Sept. 2001. But after a lot of hard work
by Rona, and everyone connected to The Church in New Cumnock,
the terminable tenure was turned around after only three years,
and the Church was returned to Full Status, where it deserved to be.

Induction - The Sequel.

From Ayr they came, with big stick in hand,
and proceeded to tell US, what THEY had planned
But they hadn’t reckoned on people power,
or our love for this Church, with its old clock tower

So we duly elected a vacancy committee.
And they had to search, each town and city.
For a minister, who would help us reach our goal,
they would have to work hard, with heart and with
soul.

So after many meetings, when some harsh words
were said,
it was decided that we could go ahead,
and search for a minister, for a term of five years.
Then we’d be looked at again, by our Presbytery
Peers.

What we had before us was no mean task.
Where do we look? Who do we ask?.
Who would want a charge of only five years.
But the search went on; we had to conquer our fears

The committee was split into groups of four,
but had only to call on one Church door.
To listen to a minister, and arrange interviews.
Wondering if this was the one, who could fill our
pews.

As time went on and names got fewer.
We prayed that God, would help us secure,
the person who was right, for the job to take us.
To where we belonged. Back to Full Status.

But God as we know, works in mysterious ways.
And all at once, things, just seemed to fall into place
One minister stood out above all the rest.
We had found the person, who suited our needs the
best.

We should have known better, we didn’t find her at
all,
it was she who found us, when she answered God’s
call.
So we invited her to come, and preach in our
Church,
and the congregation said YES, because they liked
her so much.

She had been very happy, at Crosshouse, for ten
years.
She was sorry to leave, and had shed many tears.
She hadn’t planned to go, and would have stayed
longer,
but felt the calling of God, had been stronger.

Her induction was attended by every Presbytery
member,
it had never happened before, no one could
remember.
And after all the speeches, and God’s praises sung.
We had our minister, the REV. RONA YOUNG.

But that was only the beginning of what lay ahead,
a lot of hard work, and lots of prayers to be said,
we must all pull together, and work as hard as we can,
and put together our Full Status Plan.

It’s not going to be easy, no one said it would,
we had to fill the pews as fast as we could,
we had only five years to change Presbytery’s mind,
so we needed all the help that we could find.

So the first place we turned to was God, and we asked,
please help us and Rona to fulfill our task.
We knew we would make it with God on our side,
but we must be seen doing it, there’s no place to hide.

So it was up to everyone to pull their weight,
no one person could seal our fate,
minister, session, every organisation,
and every member of the congregation.

If we all worked together, we would see this through,
it could not be left in the hands of a few,
so we knocked on the doors of every street,
telling them where and when we meet.

Everyone was made welcome, no one turned away,
some only came once, but some decided to stay.
So the congregation got bigger, the pews started to fill,
and were not finished yet, there’s lots to do still.

So members of Presbytery, I’m sure you’ve found out,
that the people of New Cumnock never had any doubt,
we’d be returned to Full Status, for all to see,
and it didn’t take us five years, it only took three.

THE END
