David Breckenridge
Private, 55474, 15th Bn., Highland Light Infantry, died of wounds in a Casualty
Clearing Station on the 2nd June 1918, buried Bac du Sud British Cemetery,
Bailleuval, ref I E 19. He was the son of David and Jane, Mansfield village
and was an apprentice tailor to Kirkland

Private, 16035, 6th Bn., Kings Own Scottish Borderers, kia on the 3rd May 1917
in the 3rd Battle of the Scarpe (Arras Offensive). He has no known grave
but is remembered on the Arras Memorial, Bay 6. He was the son of Mrs Kate
Lindsay, Afton Bridgend
Andrew Buchanan
Private, 132124, 9th Co. Machine Gun Corps, died on the 19th August 1918 as
a POW, buried Poznan Old Garrison
Cemetery, ref Memorial 21. He was the son of William, Pathhead and was an apprentice
baker with Henderson and a member of the 46th Ayrs. Boy Scouts.
Hugh Craig
Gunner, 116702, 54th Heavy Artillery Group, Royal Garrison Artillery, kia on
the 30th July, 1917 at Nieupoort, Belgium, buried Coxyde Military Cemetery,
ref II C 2. He was the son of Thomas and Annie of Mounthope
William Craig
Private, 132262, 42nd Bn., Canadian Inf. (Quebec Regt.), kia on the 3rd November
1917 during the 3rd battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), buried Passchendaele
New British Cemetery, ref I A 2. He lived at Watsonburn then emigrated
to Canada.
William Dowie
Trooper, 1933, Scots Guards (Household Bn.,), kia on the 11th April 1917 during
the Arras Offensive. He has no known grave but is remembered on the Arras
Memorial, Bay 1. He was the husband of Mrs Dowie, Afton Bridgend and a
postman and Arthur Memorial elder
James Galston
Private, 1st/5th Bn., Royal Scots Fusiliers, died in a base hospital on the
17th September 1918, buried Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimile, ref II
F 11. He was the husband of Ellen Houston, Burnbrae Cottage, Pathhead
James Irvine (Irving)
Private, S/4549, 9th Bn., Black Watch, kia on the 25th September 1915 on the
1st day of the Battle of Loos. He has no known grave but is remembered
on the Loos Memorial, Panel 78—83. He was the son of Alexander of
Mansfield Village.
James Campbell Logan
Lance Serjeant, 332006, 9th Bn., Highland Light Infantry, kia on the
25th September 1917 during the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), buried
Bedford House Cemetery, Ieper, ref II L 16. He was the son of William and Jessie
of the Coupla and worked for Hunter the grocer.
George Nisbet McDonald
Private, 16865, 6th Bn., Cameron Highlanders, died of pleurisy in a base hospital
on 13th March 1916, buried Lillers Communal Cemetery, ref IV E 44. He was
the son of David and Mary, Connelpark.
There were two William McDonalds from the village who died during the Great War. They served in different regiments but the Arthur Memorial Cross does not specify regiments, so both are mentioned here.

Private, 20088, 6th/7th Bn., Royal Scots Fusiliers, kia on the 23rd April 1917
during the Arras Offensive, buried Canadian Cemetery No. 2, Neuville St
Vaast, ref 20 A 9. He stayed at 46, Connelpark, played for Lanemark FC
and worked for New Cumnock Collieries
William McDonald
Private, 41507, 7th/8th Bn., Kings Own Scottish Borderers, kia on the 23rd
July 1918 during the 2nd Battle of the Marne (Attack on Buzancy), buried
Buzancy Military Cemetery, ref I B 20. He was the son of Farquhar of Pathhead
and an apprentice tailor.
Hugh McDonald
Private, S/4078, 9th Bn., Black Watch, kia on the 25th September 1915 on the
1st day of the Battle of Loos. He has no known grave but is remembered
on the Loos Memorial, Panel 78—83. he was the brother of George above.
John Park
Private, 4917, 9th Bn., Highland Light Infantry, kia on the 15th July 1916
during the action at High Wood, Somme. He has no known grave but is remembered
on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 15C. He was the son of Adam and
Margaret and was a grocer with the Co-op.
John Purdie
Private, 46836, 11th Bn., Leicestershire Regt., died of wounds in a Casualty
Clearing Station on 1st July 1918, buried Esquelbecq Military Cemetery,
ref II a 26. He stayed at Afton Bridgend, played for Afton Thistle and
was a baker with Henderson.
Edward Smith
Private, S/10592, 2nd Bn., Black Watch, kia on the 22nd April 1916
during the Mesopotamian Campaign, buried Amara War Cemetery, Iraq, ref XVII
H 8. He was the son of James and Jean of Waterside.
Andrew Sturrock
Lieutenant, 3rd attached 1st Bn., Royal Scots Fusiliers, kia on 14th July 1916
during the Attack on Bazentin Ridge, Somme, buried Flatiron Copse Cemetery,
Mametz, ref Special Memorial 6. He was the son of David and Isabella of
Mossmark who bought, in his memory, a Communion Set for use in the Arthur
Memorial Church. This is now kept in the Vestry of the Parish Church.
David Turnbull
Private, 260081, 5th Bn., Gordon Highlanders, kia on the 16th May 1917 during
the Arras Offensive (Capture of Roeux). He has no known grave but is remembered
on the Arras Memorial, Bay 8 and 9. He was the son of William and Jane
of Lanehead
William Turnbull
Died on the 5th April 1925 in the Western Infirmary, Glasgow during an operation
for Tuberculosis on the knee. He probably caught the disease during his
war service. His death is beyond the time span recognised for war casualties
but was before the cross was dedicated. He is buried in the Afton Road
cemetery. He was the son of James Turnbull, blacksmith.
William Gilmour Tweedie
Private, 273096, 11th Bn., Royal Scots, kia between the 22nd and 25th March
1918 during the German Spring Offensive. He has no known grave but is remembered
on the Pozieres Memorial, Panel 13 and 14. He was the son of James and
Agnes of Mossmark and was the clerk to the School Board

William Turnbull
Flight Sergeant,1820580, 35 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, kia
on the 29th November 1944 during a bombing raid to Dortmund. He is remembered
on the Runnymede Memorial, England, Panel 222. He was the son of Hugh and
Annie and a member of the 46th Ayrs. Rover Scouts
James Love Calderwood
Gunner, 3130451, Royal Artillery, kia on the 17th September 1944 during the
Italian Campaign, buried Coriano Ridge War Cemetery, Italy, ref XX B 8.
He was the son of Andrew and Margaret, The Castle.
James Rorrison (Rorison)
Sergeant, 1358058, 51 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, kia on the
26th June 1943 on a bombing raid to Gelsenkirchen., buried Harderwijk General
Cemetery, Holland, ref British plot 2, grave 10. He worked at Seaforth
Mine.
Robert Rush
Private, 4081339, 8th Bn., Royal Scots, kia on the 19th July 1944 during the
Battle of Normandy, buried
St Manvieu War Cemetery, Cheux, ref IV D 3. He stayed at The Burn and was an
apprentice joiner to Tweedie at Mossmark.
